Left aligned maps have most of thier landmass situated on the left side of the picture as opposed to the right or top side. These maps may be thought of as being in oppostion to maps of Europe which focused upon that continent as the principle landmass and the Atlantic as the principle ocean. Naturally this is only possible where a certain amount of ocean is present
